Logchutes downhill on the line...

Now's your chance to let YOUR voice be heard in support of a sanctioned - ONE WAY downhill trail at Logchutes.

Input sought on Log Chutes downhill. One of Durango’s most beloved joy rides could be getting a makeover.

The Log Chutes downhill, a 3.5 mile stretch once used as the Nationals Downhill course, would get a buff and shine and be inducted as an official one-way only trail under a proposed plan by the San Juan National Forest. First floated by Trails 2000 in 2010, the “Log Chutes Downhill Mountain Bike Trail Project” calls for reconstructing and connecting the confusing mass of nonsystem and/or renegade trails that have sprouted up on the Forest Service land, northwest of Durango off Junction Creek Road. The new trail would be designated as a one-way downhill bike trail.

The goal of the Log Chutes plan is to provide a properly designed, safe and legal trail while eliminating potential conflicts with other users. The Forest Service is conducting a public comment period on the proposal through Wed., May 23. Trails 2000 has received grant money from the San Juan National Forest to implement the proposal, should it be approved.

“Right now, the Forest Service is scoping to get public input on what their thoughts, ideas and feelings are,” Jed Botsford, Columbine District Recreation Staff officer, said Tuesday.

According to the Forest Service, public lands across the nation are seeing a growing number of illegal downhill mountain bike trails, and the San Juan is no different. Although the Log Chutes downhill has been permitted over the years for a variety of special events, it is not an “official” Forest Service trail. Despite this, it has seen an increased amount of use as evidenced by truck loads of bikers often shuttling back up the road for another run.

“The sport started about 20 years ago now, but it is gaining more and more popularity every year,” Botsford said.

However, such trails create concerns, not only over resource impacts and poor trail design, but safety. “In our initial scoping, the answer was, ‘Yes, make it a single-direction, single-use trail,’ purely for safety reasons,” he said. “When people are screaming downhill on downhill bikes, if someone is on a horse going up, those two uses don’t really mesh.”

He said he knew of at least three other user-created rogue courses on local public lands – including one in the Middle Mountain area near Vallecito. “They just sort of popped up because demand was there, and people were looking for somewhere to ride,” he said.

The Log Chutes downhill would be the first officially designated trial of its kind in the area.

The proposed alignment would follow an old fire line as well as parts of nonsanctioned roads and trails. The new trail would be adopted into the Forest Service’s system of trails and be consistent with the Forest Management Plan. In reviewing the plan, the Forest Service will look at potential effects on wildlife habitat, recreation and safety, noxious weed infestations, soil and watershed conditions, and cultural resources. Public comments will be included in a forthcoming draft environmental assessment.

If only all dreams came true... Dream Builds...

When I was a kid my mother and father told me to dream big and someday those dreams will come true. So far, that hasn't happened but I keep on dreaming big and setting goals for myself to achieve. One of my goals in life is to make a living riding my bikes... somehow. I'd love to race or be a test rider of bikes, components and gear.

I've been riding bikes since I was 5 years old. Started out doing BMX and it evolved into MTB. When I was into BMX I rode park, street, vert, dirt jump and even dabbled lightly in flatland. After a back-flip attempt gone wrong I had to recover and got off the bike for about 3 years.

One day a friend of mine showed up and asked me to go riding mountain bikes with him. I was hesitant at first. When I was riding BMX I had never seen the extreme side of MTB riding. It was always XC or road cycling. I decided to take him up on the offer. We did some freeride and light downhill and I was hooked. Never looked back since.

Bikes and riding bikes are my passion. Since I've spent the past couple days sick and barely able to sleep. I had to find ways to keep busy and kill time. I decided to do a dream build list for my freeride bike and my dirt jump bike. I know that I'll never be able to afford this spec list of the components. But it's always nice to dream right?

After about 2 days of designing and pondering my dream builds, this is what I came up with:

What's the point of an imagination if you don't put it to good use?.. On that note I will let you get back to your day. I hope you all have a great weekend! Get out and ride! Thanks for reading!

Marrow Components Wide Body FR Stem - It's in their bones!

First thing I must say is that I dig this stem. I've been using the Marrow Components Wide Body stem for nearly 8 months and I find it to be a perfect fit on my freeride rig. Just the right size and weight. With a length of 50mm and no rise. The Wide Body stem is designed to perform best with handlebars having no more than 25.4mm (1") rise.

It looks like a massive chunk of metal, which I love. But it's incredibally light for its size, always a bonus. The 'M' shaped faceplate is cool looking but handles its purpose well. It grips tight to the handlebars and steerer tube using supplied 12.9 grade alloy hardware. I've never had to adjust it since I bolted it on. Stem comes with 2 sets of bolts. One set silver, the other black.

This bad boy has taking a beating and hasn't failed me yet. It's seen all forms of terrain and riding styles. Not to mention it's bashed into rocks & roots during crashes and barely has a scratch on it. Made for 31.8mm oversided bars and your choice of 1.125" (1⅛") or 1.5" (1½") steerer tube diameters. You also get 6 anodized color choices: Black, Blue, Purple, Green, Orange, and Teal.

Wickedly Thin! AE-01 Evo Pedals from HT Components

I've spent the past 7 months putting HT's AE-01 pedals to the test on my freeride rig and my dirt jump rig. In that time on these pedals I have come to love them. Only one pedal slip and it was purely my fault, I barely had my foot on the pedal.

Traction is maximized with 10 grip pins on each side of the pedal and a thickness of only 11mm. The platform measures 102mm long x 96mm wide x 11mm thin. Eliminating roll overs completely. Not to mention it gives you better ground clearance and they look great.

These bad boys have seen their share of abuse in all kinds of situations and conditions. Snow, rain, mud, silt, sand, rocks, roots, etc. I find these flats work great for freeride, downhill, all mountain, dirt jump and even cross country.

The AE-01's have gnarly amounts of traction due to 20 grip pins per pedal. They weigh next to nothing, 358 grams for the pair. The pedal body is made of CNC machined extruded aluminum. Measuring 102mm x 96mm x 11mm (L/W/H). Spindles are CNC machined out of cromoly steel with dual DU bushings and one patent bearing.

Weight---: 358g (Pair)
Size-----: 102 x 96 x 11mm (L x W x H)
Body-----: Aluminum extruded / CNC machined
Spindle--: CNC machined cr-moly
Bearings-: Dual DU bushing + one patent bearing
Pins-----: 20 Replaceable grip pins per pedal
MSRP-----: $150 USD
